Canada-based NuGen Medical Devices has announced plans to research and develop a new needle-free injection system that utilises internal cartridge technology.

This advancement in drug delivery is protected under international patent WO2021206553, which has been granted in China and the European Union, with pending applications in the US and Canada.

The system aims to simplify drug administration and improve patient safety.

Its design features a sterile internal insulin cartridge integrated into NuGen’s needle-free autoinjector. This concept was developed by Nicky Canton, the inventor associated with the patent.

Unlike existing systems, such as InsuJet, which require external connectors for insulin transfer, this new approach eliminates the need for manual filling.

Key features of the new system include the removal of external adaptors, which streamlines the injection process, and a backflow control mechanism that addresses challenges related to high-pressure backflow in jet injection.

NuGen Medical Devices CEO Liang Lin said: “This innovation is anticipated to be most welcomed for patients who rely on daily injections.

“By embedding a prefilled cartridge directly into our needle-free platform, this will become a solution that rivals the convenience of pen-based injectors, without the needle.”

The company plans to initiate clinical investigations using its existing needle-free platform, allowing for the concurrent development of the cartridge-based system while collecting clinical data for new drug indications.

NuGen intends to produce working prototypes within six months to demonstrate the technology and conduct usability trials.

Full tooling investment is anticipated to begin early next year, facilitating scaled manufacturing and eventual commercialisation.

Last year, NuGen announced the expansion of its distribution network for the needle-free InsuJet injection device to Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica and Peru.
